Olney Enterprise welcomes Ethan Nickel as the new Editor

The Olney Enterprise welcomes Ethan Nickel as the new editor of the paper. Nickel recently graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and a minor in Math and Science. Nickel has lived in Graham since he was 12 years old, graduating from Graham High School in 2015.

Nickel was the sports editor at The Southwestern newspaper before joining Olney Enterprisecovering all SWOSU athletics as well as covering the SWOSU Women’s basketball team, who finished as the National Champion runner up this past season. He was involved with several organizations on campus in college, working as a student orientation leader all four years. He was a counselor for Camp Duke at SWOSU for three summers, a camp designed to help incoming freshman get more familiar with the campus and college life.

As a student leader, Nickel was a teacher’s assistant (TA) for freshman orientation as well, essentially working and teaching a class as a professor for freshman in their first eight weeks in college. Nickel was also involved with the Baptist Collegiate Ministry on campus for many years, as well as the local churches in Weatherford. Since graduating from college, Nickel has been working as an intern for the Olney Enterprise for the past several months, writing articles for the sports page throughout the summer for the Enterprise, as well as opinion articles.

Nickel has always been very interested in mass communication and journalism having a sports blog online for the past three years. He has always had a passion for sports, whether that be writing, watching, or playing, and he has played sports for as long as he could, quite notably playing basketball, baseball and cross country at Graham since he started public school there going into his 8th grade year. Playing basketball and running cross country throughout high school has helped him become the man that he is today. “Playing basketball and running cross country at Graham for Coach Marcus Morris really helped me get where I am today—knowing that every practice and every game to give a perfect effort and working as hard as possible. I think that is something that I have translated to all aspects of my life—to give a perfect effort and that is something that I will do as editor at Olney Enterprise. As a basketball player in high school, I had the opportunity to play against Olney in basketball, as well as play with Cooper Pulliam on the FCA All-star team. I have really admired Olney from afar from my time in Graham, from getting to know Cooper to both of my parents working at Olney High School. This is a place I am happy to be, and I am blessed to be part of this community.”
