OJH Recognizes Essay Contest Winner
When Graham Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars [VFW] Post 8567 announced an essay contest, local Olney Junior High School student Sophie Roach rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
The contest, known as the Patriot Pen, is run by the VFW organization. Roach said each contestant is required to write about what they think it means to be a patriot. The nationwide competition begins at a local level, with each contest being held at local VFW posts and winners moving on to a higher level. Roach won district honors for her essay and hopes to advance to State.
Roach titled her essay “What is a Good American?” and described the essay as being about the values of a good American and what problems a good American might face in day-to-day life. Roach said she planned to save the money she won in the college contest.

Congratulations, Sophie!
