Olney Elementary School’s new special education teacher Brian Saunders says he was born a New Yorker but has lived in Texas so long – about 30 years – that he considers himself a citizen of the Lone Star State.

Mr. Saunders has taught all over North Texas, including in Wichita Falls, Jacksboro, Paradise and most recently at Bryson Independent School District as a history teacher.

He and his wife, Julie Saunders, live in Graham. Mr. Saunders said he became interested in working in Olney when Mrs. Saunders, who teaches fourth-grade writing at Olney Elementary School, suggested that he apply for the special education post.

The couple met while both attended college in Missouri. They graduated and went on to pastor at a church in New York, and then moved to Texas to be close to Mrs. Saunders’ roots in Graham.

Mr. Saunders said he looks forward to teaching in Olney.

He enjoys teaching elementary school classes because students at that age have a real excitement and are enthusiastic about coming to school, he said.
