OISD Competes in Recycled Art Contest

Several OISD students competed in the Youth Recycled Art Contest hosted by the Home & Garden Festival on Feb. 22-23 in Wichita Falls.

“The students had to prepare by thinking of something that they could turn into art out of recycled, donated, and other types of materials,” OHS art teacher Kayla Glover said. “ They were given a budget of $15 and had to work with that.”

This competition was meant to give the students a chance to experiment with creating art out of items that they may just throw away after being used, some of these examples being old toys or game pieces, buttons or zippers, rubber bands, egg cartons, and more. Each student creatively utilized recycled objects for their projects, with seventh grader Ella Richards placing third out of everyone in the 6-12 age group, with the prize being a $50 savings account with Texoma Community Credit Union along with a $100 donation to OJH for the arts program.

“A lot of students reused canvases or sculpted things out of unique materials,” Glover said. “They had a lot of freedom of expression and took that and ran with it.”
