OHS Homecoming

A loud ruckus rang through the city as the sun set on August 26 - the night of Olney High School’s Homecoming as fans cheered on the Cubs at their season opener against the Alvord Bulldogs and celebrated the crowning of this year’s Homecoming Queen. There was electricity in the air as the crowd poured into Cub Stadium - air thick with laughter and loud conversation on a muggy night that ended with the Cubs tamed the Bulldogs in a 31-0 blowout.

As the Pride of Olney High School marching band took the field, the crowd took their seats and a hush came over the stadium. The band began a pre-game per- See HOMECOMING on Page 10 formance that built fan excitement to a fevered frenzy. Friday Night Lights was in full swing.

At halftime, Homecoming Queen nominees dressed in glittering gowns were escorted onto the field by their proud fathers, as enlivened Cub fans waited to hear who would wear this year’s crown. As Queen Jennifer Martinez’s name was announced, the crowd exploded into cheers, whoops and hollers. After last year’s queen, Natalie Del Villar, placed the crown upon Ms. Martinez’s head, she and her court were escorted to the sidelines, where there were plenty of smiles, tears and photo ops with friends and family. This year’s Homecoming Queen nominees were: Jennifer Martinez, Adelade Edgington, Peyton Elliott, Abby Guerra and Cate Rodriguez. This year’s Hunk nominees were Devin Esparza, Cole Turner, AB Marquez, and Louis Castillo. Mr. Castillo captured the Homecoming Hunk title this year at a mid-week pep rally at the OHS gym.

As the Cubs took the field to battle against the Bulldogs, Cub fans elevated the level of noise and cheering to frantic pitch. After a quick toss of the coin, the Cubs kicked off to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were held to low return yards by an oppressive defense that exacted its will on the Bulldog offense.

The Bulldogs were in for a long night against a highly motivated Cub defense, which dominated every yard of the battlefield. The star of the defense was Cubs defensive lineman #20 Braulio Flores. Flores had two key interceptions, one pick six for a 55-yard return during the first quarter and another pick six in the fourth quarter with a 60-yard return.

The Cub defense can be described as a swarm, and the Bulldog offense scrambled but were stopped at every turn by the swarm that smothered them on every play. Some defensive stats for the match-up include: two fumble recoveries, one by #9 Camron McComack and one by #3 AB Marquez; two interceptions by #20 Braulio Flores. The defensive unit held the Bulldog offense to 154-yards for the night.

The Cub offense played good old-fashioned smashmouth football. The offense looks extremely physical this year and had its way with the Bulldog defense. The O-line opened holes in the defensive line you could drive a Mack truck through, exacting a punishing pace for the night as the Cubs pushed their way down the field with the Veer offense.

The Cub offensive line was the star of the offense for the match-up.

Highlights include: #10 Cyler Sosa pushed through defenders for an 8-yard touchdown; a 17-yard field goal by #6 Jacob Hernandez who also kicked a successful point; #7 Colin Mason scored on a 1-yard run and a successful 2-point conversion, and rushed for 72 yards; #5 Gatlin Guy rushed for 45 yards; #10 Sosa rushed for 43 yards; #20 Flores rushed for 42 yards; #9 Mc-Cormack rushed for 37 yards; #3 AB Marquez rushed for 20 yards; #8 Castillo had 28-yards receiving, and #22 Gio Rockmore rushed for 6 yards. Mr. Rockmore left the game early after taking a big hit while stopping a huge play by the Bulldogs. The offensive racked up 265 rushing yards and 32 passing yards. The Cubs are looking like contenders this year and should go far in the playoffs.

Come out and support your Olney Cubs this season.

Fight on Cubs!!!
