OHS Homecoming

AB Marquez, Peyton Elliott, Louis Castillo,

Homecoming Week came early this year, and proved an inclusive and fun experience for students of Olney High School and the community. This year’s Homecoming did not boast the traditional bonfire at Griffin Park but had plenty of other activities to help get the fall athletes of OHS fired up for the games to come.

The week kicked off with Paint the Town Red on Aug. 14, hosted by the Olney Athletic Booster Club.

Olney Independent School District students, parents, boosters and volunteers from the community met at the gym then set out with laughter and excitement to paint windows, streets and decorate fences with messages of encouragement to boost Cub and Lady Cub spirit for the fall season.

The event concluded at the stoplight at State Highways 114 and 79, where the OHS Seniors excitedly painted the pavement with their names and the OHS logo in what is sure to be the first of a new tradition.

Next up, the Cubs hosted the Electra Tigers in a pre-season warm-up scrimmage. The Cubs handled the Tigers, clawing their way to a victory. If the game were live, the Cubs played one quarter and scored several touchdowns. The Cubs are playing a very physical game this year and teams lining up across from them had better make sure to lace up tight.

After the game, the Olney boosters club hosted a Meet the Cubs event with OHS Cheerleaders dishing out a sweet treat to attendees - free homemade ice cream. During the event, all fall OHS athletes were announced as they ran out of the fierce Cub tunnel, lining up on the field to receive loud and heartfelt applause and cheers.

Cub Stadium was full to capacity as the whole community came out to show their love for the Cubs and Lady Cubs. After introductions, Junior Cubs were paired with Cub and Lady Cub athletes, an annual event that teams the younger children with high school athletes for support. Children ran excitedly to meet the Cubs or Lady Cubs, as their names were called, some waving frantically with big grins, others running up with huge hugs and just a few ran the other way and needed a bit of coaxing.

The evening’s events ended with the naming of the OHS 2022 Homecoming Queen Nominees and the Homecoming Hunk Nominees, which included: Devin Esparza, Jennifer Martinez, Cole Turner, Adelade Edgington,

Abby Guerra and Cate Rodriguez.

On Aug. 20, the Olney American Legion Post 414 hosted a Back to School Bash at Griffin Park. Rain kept attendance down a bit for this first-time event that will surely become an annual tradition. The event included music by DJ Rad Dad, a local DJ, funnel cakes, popcorn and many other treats. Donations for school supplies were also accepted, for local students and teachers who may be needing assistance in that regard.

This year, the parade and bonfire had both been canceled for various reasons, and that did not sit well with the OHS Cheerleaders who fought hard and won the right to go ahead with the parade down Main Street. On Aug. 24, the Pride of Olney High School Marching Band, lovingly called POOHS by all who know them, led the Homecoming Queen noms, Hunks and fall athletes in a parade down main street, the parade ended at the Gazebo where the POOHS struck up plenty of spirit with their lively performance. The OHS Cheerleaders worked the crowd into a fevered roar of cheering, shouting and clapping as they performed their cheer routines. After the parade and spirit rally, the community hung around for photos and good conversation. Smiles and laughter floated in the air as the community came together to celebrate and give a boost to the OHS athletes. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Olney Enterprise next week to read all about the Crowning of Hunk and Queen as well as the first game of the season as the Cubs battle the Alvord Bulldogs.
