


OHS Band Students Advance to State
Six students from the Pride of Olney High School Band will advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest in May. Olney High School was host for one of the UIL Region 7 North Zone Solo and Ensemble Contests on Saturday, March 6.
Musicians advancing to the state level are senior Jet Toney (euphonium), senior Kiara Allen (piano solo), and sophomore Adelade Edgington (vocal solo). In addition, the Miscellaneous Saxophone Trio composed of junior Sarah Roach and sophomores Justin Simmons and Richard Walp received a superior rating on their ensemble performance.
Soloists playing Class I solos but not advancing are sophomore Jennifer Martinez (oboe), senior Hector Hernandez (clarinet), and sophomore Richard Walp (alto saxophone). Johnatan DeLira performed a Class II tuba solo and received a first division his performance. Hallie Cuba (euphonium) received an excellent rating on her solo.
Jazz Ensemble members received a first division on their performance of “My Funny Valentine” and “Summertime” for contest. Members include Lisa Doan, Jennifer Martinez, Sarah Roach, Justin Simmons, and Richard Walp – saxophones, Will Bernhardt, Hallie Cuba, and Hector Hernandez – trumpets, Johnatan DeLira and Jet Toney – trombones, and Zach Dillion, Mallory Jeske, and Gary Turner – rhythm section.
Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held at the end of May as a virtual contest.
