OEP’s Kelly Mahler Named to School Board; Large Donations Expand OEP

Former Olney ISD school board trustee Kelly Mahler will temporarily return to serve on the Board of Trustees, stepping into a vacancy left by outgoing trustee Craig Mahler, who is moving out of the district.

Kelly Mahler, who previously served nine years on the school board from 2006 to 2015, agreed to take on the position after being approached by district officials. The Olney ISD board unanimously appointed him at its April 28 meeting, avoiding the significant expense of a special election for a oneyear term.

“I’ve been through this before during my previous tenure when I had to step down because my sister became a math teacher in the district,” Mr. Mahler said. “I understand how challenging it can be for the board to fill a vacancy, especially with the expense and timing of a special election.”

His return to the board comes at a pivotal moment for the district, as Olney ISD transitions to a new superintendent, Dr. Matt Caffey, and continues construction of the campus storm shelters funded by last year’s $8.5 million bond issue.

“I’ve had all the required training, so I’m able to step right in,” Mr. Mahler said. “It allows the board and the community time to thoughtfully select candidates for the upcoming regular election next year.”

Mr. Mahler said he has “no desire to run again after this year,” he said. “My goal is simply to provide continuity and support during an important time for the district.”

Mahler, who also chairs the Olney Education Foundation (OEF), noted the nonprofit is thriving, awarding scholarships to an increasing number of students. This year, the OEF will award six scholarships, up from its previous average of three. Currently, the organization supports a total of 30 students, including high school juniors and seniors, as well as students currently attending college.

The Foundation’s recent expansion also includes acquiring office space on Main Street to provide OEF with a location to meet students and their families to discuss financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and college orientation.

“It’s something we’ve needed for a long time, and it’ll greatly enhance our ability to help students,” he said He said the foundation recently received “substantial” donations, including one from a 1957 Olney High School graduate, as well as numerous smaller contributions from across the community.

“The alumni have been incredible supporters of the foundation, and their generosity allows us to keep expanding the number of students we help,” he said.

Mr. Mahler’s appointment to the school board officially begins immediately and will conclude with next year’s regular election.
