OCLAC Hosts A Cowboy Story Evening
The Olney Community Library & Art Center [OCLAC] hosted cowboy storyteller Nick Waters to relate the tale of the Abernathy Boys as part of the library’s summer activities.
Although the evening event was scheduled as an adult activity, according to the OCLAC Director Lori Cox, it drew a good crowd of children who sat spellbound and captivated by Cowboy Nick’s every word.
He related, from several perspectives, the story of young brothers Louis “Bud” and Temple Abernathy who rode their horses from the East Coast to the West Coast at ages 7 and 11 as part of a bet made by their father, Jack “Catch ‘em Alive” Abernathy.
Cowboy Nick told the story in character and dressed in handmade clothing, boots and a cigar-roll hat patterned on early 1900s designs for the story. The Abernathy Boys’ coast-to-coast ride took place in 1911 and was chronicled in a biography written by Temple Abernathy’s wife, Alta.
The event drew a full house at the library, and was one of two storytellers hosted that week at the library. For more information on OCLAC summer activities please visit their Facebook page.
