Making It Up As I Go

Making It Up As I Go

The Christmas season is delightful. We love the “real” meaning of Christmas, and knowing that the baby Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem— coming into our world to give us God’s saving grace.

Of course, we enjoy the special gatherings, the gift ex changes, the great food, and the special tasty treats. But at some point we crave just everyday living…getting back to our favorite foods and routine. That is what I was thinking when I decided to cook up something that speaks of a cold winter day, and a cozy fire.

I had some delicious, leftover roast beef in the freezer. I did not feel like just heating it up, and maybe adding a baked potato. My taste buds ‘screamed’ for something more! I looked to see what I might put together to make a tasty ‘dish of the day!’ Aw-haw—Beef Stew!

I don’t know about your cooking, but I think there are just certain flavors that go together. The T.V. chefs say the ‘Holy Grail’ of cooking is onion, garlic, and celery— that is probably a good place to start!

So, I have the beef, onion, garlic, and celery— now what? I see beef broth, a can of corn, diced tomatoes, and of course I have potatoes, and carrots.

There will also be salt and pepper added to finish getting the flavor just right—that is determined by the “taste test.” I think a cook must always taste the food she is cooking and serving!

My hint of the day: If the cook is really not satisfied with the final taste results, don’t reveal that thought to the people you are serving…they will probably love it, and think it is wonderful!
