100 YEARS AGO – APRIL 9, 1920

RETAIL AND FINANCIAL CONDITIONS IN OLNEY

Olney and the extensive territory tributary to Olney are in better financial conditions than they have ever been before. Farmers who have, as a rule, been forced to borrow money on which to operate have raised excellent crops and received substantial market prices for them which has given them sufficient capital for the operation of their farms for the coming year and the payment of all past made obligations.

75 YEARS AGO – APRIL 6, 1945

JOHN HRNCIRIK WOUNDED AT RHINE CROSSING

Pfc. John Jimmie Hrncirik of Mergargel is now in a hospital in Europe and able to walk on crutches, according to a letter received from him this week. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hrncirik, his parents, were previously notified by the War Department that their son was wounded March 9th in the right leg while crossing the Rhine River in Germany. He had last written to his parents from a foxhole in Germany. Prior to entering the Army he was a junior student in Texas A&M college.

50 YEARS AGO- APRIL 9, 1970

HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS TAKE UIL DISTRICT LITERARY MEET

Olney high school students won the literary events contest and placed third in the golf tournament early this week. In the literary events 9 students qualified for the regional contest to be held at North Texas State University April 24th and 25th.

25 YEARS AGO-APRIL 6, 1995

CUB GOLFERS TAKE 2ND AT BURK

Olney Cub golf team finished in second place in the Burkburnett tournament. Johnnie Melton won a playoff for the top medalist (low scorer) spot. Melton ended the 18-hole tournament with a 75 score and tied with Reagan Underwood of Seymour for first. Melton won the title on the second extra hole of sudden death play.
