K9 Bond serves arrest warrant

Olney K9 Officer Bond led police through rough country near Newcastle to corner a 24-year-old man wanted on an arrest warrant, Police Chief Dan Birbeck said.

On Sept. 9, K9 Bond and his handler, Police Cpl. Miranda Wright received a call to assist the Young County Sheriff ’s Office on State Highway 251 near Ward Road, where a deputy had lost track of a “felony-wanted subject that had a blue warrant, which is a go-back-to-prison warrant,” Chief Birbeck said.

Chief Birbeck and Cpl. Wright deployed to the scene with K9 Bond and apprehended Timothy Rhoades at around 7 p.m., he said.

“Olney officers heard Deputy Sanderson of the Young County Sheriff ’s Office dispatched to do a welfare check on a man who was near Newcastle at Ward Road and 251,” Chief Birbeck said. “A short time later, Deputy Sanderson radioed that subject was fleeing from him on foot. He requested K9 assistance. Officer Wright, K9 Bond and myself responded along with the game warden.”

Cpl. Wright started a track … and we went a quarter-mile or better out into the mesquite trees and K9 Bond led us to a tank battery,” he said.

Chief Birbeck spotted the suspect near the tank battery lying on the ground with no shirt and no shoes. “He had socks and shorts that was it,” he said. “He ran out of his shoes apparently.”

Mr. Rhoades was arrested for a parole violation and evading arrest or detention, he said. Mr. Rhoades was walked back to the patrol car and evaluated by Emergency Medical Services before being transported to Young County Jail, he said.
