First State Bank Donates to FBCO & Sr. Cub Center
First State Bank of Graham (Olney Branch) [FSBG], donated $10,000 to the First Baptist Church of Olney’s Food Bank and Senior Cub Center during the big freeze of 2021, when many Olney Citizens were without power for an extended period of time.
The goal of the donation, according to FSBG President Barry Gober, was to help those in need, who may be without food. Pastor Chad Edgington of FBCO said the funds sat mostly unused during the time of the donation, so Pastor Edgington thought about what was needed and met with Gober, the outcome was a new freezer for FBCO’s food pantry and additional funds for the Meal on Wheels program at the Senior Cub Center.
Vice-President of FSBG, David Parkey, who was also instrumental in getting the funds donated to the two organizations said “We are here for the long run in the community (Olney) and we all want to be a part of the community. This was an ideal opportunity to benefit the community (Olney).”
Pastor Edgington said the funds were originally donated during the “Snowmageddon” of Olney in 2022, to the Ministerial Alliance, for those that had damage to their homes here in Olney. Pastor Edgington later approached FSBG with the idea of repurposing the funds to go to the two organizations.
Laura Dillard, Director of the Food Pantry at FBCO gave insight about the Food Pantry stating, “The food pantry that we call the ministry, has helped at FBCO since 2013 and has allowed us to distribute370,300 pounds of food. We averaged 46,250 pounds a year and have served 27,000 people since 2013, which is approximately 3300 people per year.
What we kind of were needing was cold storage. so this gift from FSBG has allowed us to buy a commercial refrigerator that has a lot more cold storage where we have mainly protein, like chicken and beef, that’ll give the ability to be able to take more of that perishable meat because we have more cold storage for it. We appreciate the gift!” To receive food from the FBCO visit the 929 Bluebonnet St., Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or call 940-564- 5594 for delivery.
Angela Lockard, Director of the Senior Cub Center located in Olney said “The donation was very much appreciated and will greatly help the Meal on Wheels program as well as the lunches served at the center.” For more information on Meals on Wheels or dining at the Senior Cub Center please call 940-564-2782 or visit their Facebook page @OlneyCubCenter.
