Elections chief says check registration, vote
There has been a lot of talk about Texas purging 1.1 million from its voter rolls ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, but Young County Elections Administrator Kaitlyn Mosley said the process was no different this cycle than any other.
“I haven’t noticed any difference,” she said. “We will have weekend voting this time around.”
Young County allows voters to remain in “suspense” for two years after they move and fail to change their addresses with the County, Ms. Mosley said. During this period, voters can fill out change of address forms at the polls and vote as normal, she said. After two years, they are canceled from the voter rolls, meaning they must fill out and mail in new voter registration forms to her Young County office.
“If I get a piece of mail back on them they go into suspense. Say they don’t go and vote for the next two years and they don’t come in and [change their address] they will be canceled,” she said.
Voter registration forms are available at the Young County Courthouse, the public libraries in Graham and Olney and at the Texas Department of Public Safety offices. The forms must be returned to the Young County Elections Administrator by mail or in person to be valid, she said.
Ms. Mosley encouraged Young County citizens who are unsure of their registration status to call her office at 940521-9483, or to send her an email at k.mosley@youngcounty.org before the Oct. 7 registration deadline. They also may check their status online at the Texas Secretary of State’s My Voter Portal website.
Registered voters must bring an official state-issued driver’s license or identification card to the polls to cast a ballot, she said. The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot is Oct. 25 for voters who qualify by being over 65, disabled or absent from the County during the voting period.
This year, Young County will keep the polls open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. the weekend before the election, she said. The following is the schedule of early and election-day voting as well as polling locations compiled by the Elections Supervisor.
