Dion Sims

Dion Sims, Democrat

Dione Sims, a Fort Worth native and community organiser, is best known publicly as the granddaughter of Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and a close partner in Ms. Lee’s long campaign to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Ms. Sims traces her roots from Southwest High School to earning a business degree at Texas Wesleyan University, and she founded a nonprofit—Unity Unlimited— in 2000, initially built around youth events and bringing young people together.

Her run for Congress is anchored in bread-andbutter and civil-rights concerns. Ms. Sims has cited “a living and prevailing wage,” affordable health care, and the rising costs of food and fuel, while arguing that education must keep pace with technology.

She has also cast the race in values terms, saying she sees “freedoms being stripped” and wants leaders who will protect those freedoms rather than “causing problems.”

In the Democratic primary, Ms. Sims faces William Marks; the winner advances to challenge incumbent Republican Rep. Roger Williams in the general election.
