Cub UIL Team goes big at Regionals

Last week on April 15-16, OHS competed in the Regional UIL tournament at Grayson College. Many teams competed at this year’s Regional tournament, including Accounting, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Informative Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Literary Criticism, Mathematics, Number Sense, Persuasive Speaking, Ready Writing, and Science, as well as Spelling and Vocabulary.

Olney placed second as a team out of the 57 schools competing at the Region 2 contest. Olney’s Speech Team even brought home the championship trophy, placing first. Both the Accounting Team and the Literary Criticism Team also brought home gold medals.

The OHS Accounting Team qualified for state with Sarah Roach placing third, as well as Peyton Kulhanek placing third, and state alternate Sarah Green placing fifth. Adelade Edgington placed second in Informative Speaking to qualify for state. Literary Criticism also qualified for state as a team with Jennifer Martinez placing fourth as a state alternate, Sarah Roach placing sixth, Hallie Cuba placing 12th and Keirah Wilk placing 24th.

Gary Turner placed first in Persuasive Speaking, making him a state qualifier, and Ari Livingston placed fourth as a state alternate. Sarah Stroud placed fourth in Ready Writing, making her a state alternate.

Calculator Applications placed third as a team with Sarah Roach placing ninth, Jennifer Martinez placing 10th, Angel Alvarado placing 13th and Ellie Hinson placing 22nd.

Jaden Jacoba placed 10th, Brian Hernandez placed 12th and Maggie Olvera placed 15th in Computer Applications. Rodolfo Arce placed fifth and Gary Turner placed sixth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Mathematics placed third as a team with Jennifer Martinez placing seventh, Sarah Roach placing ninth, Angel Alvarado placing 13th, and Ellie Hinson placing 31st. Number Sense also placed third as a team with Sarah Roach placing seventh, Peyton Kulhanek placing ninth, Angel Alvarado placing 11th, and Kiara Allen placing 12th. Peyton Valdez placed 17th in Science. The Spelling and Vocabulary Team placed fourth as a team with Kiara Allen placing 11th, Lindsey Piedra placing 14th, Sarah Stroud placing 23rd, and Richard Walp placing 27th.
