County Issues Burn Ban

The Young County Commissioners Court has issued a burn ban for all unincorporated areas of the county, effective for 90 days from July 28 through October 25, due to conditions that significantly increase the risk of wildfires. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning and makes violations a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Commissioners said the order was necessary to protect lives and property as hot, dry conditions persist. The ban will remain in effect unless lifted earlier if the Commissioners Court determines that fire danger has lessened.

While most outdoor burning is prohibited, the order allows limited exceptions including firefighter training, utility and pipeline work, and certified prescribed burns that meet state standards.

The declaration also provides strict safety rules for commercial and professional welding operations, which remain permitted under the following conditions: A spotter is required for each welder or anyone performing cutting or grinding.

Work areas must be cleared of vegetation within a perimeter three times the height of the welding or kept wet.

At least 100 gallons of water and multiple fire extinguishers must be on site.

Welding must stop if winds exceed 20 mph. Welders must call the Young County Sheriff at 940-549-1555 before starting work to provide their location and contact information. The order also prohibits the outdoor use of combustible materials, including fireworks, discarded cigarettes, and other items that could spark a fire.
