Community celebrates OVFD at annual banquet

Young County residents and local officials gathered on Feb. 23 to celebrate at the annual Olney Volunteer Fire Department Banquet. The event was held at the Olney Civic Center and it was a packed house this year.

The banquet began with a few words from Olney Fire Chief Clint Pulliam then a prayer from OVFD Chaplin Jeff Harvey. Olney Elementary Principal and Volunteer Firemen Gunter Rodriguez took over as the Master of Ceremonies for the night. Mr. Rodriguez exhibited a quick wit as he announced winners of door prizes, aided by OVFD Mascot Samuel Ickert. The evening included a catered meal of chicken and beef fajitas, followed by an awards presentation ceremony to honor the volunteers who battled a tough fire season. This year’s OVFD Fireman of the Year commendation was awarded to Jason Pack. A special award was presented to retired Olney Police Department dispatcher Deena Clark. Mrs. Clark was recognized with the award for her years of dedication, and expertise and for always filling in for the OVFD to help with calls and other crucial activities when the firefighters were shorthanded.

Chief Pulliam described the current fire season as “a pretty smooth year so far.”

“We’ve been very fortunate,” he said. “We appreciate everybody that’s here at the banquet and all that help volunteer and help the OVFD.”

Young County officials and the region’s emergency services teams were well represented at the party. Those attending included Olney Police Chief Dan Birbeck, retired OPD dispatcher Deena Clark, Olney City Administrator Arpegea Pagsuberon, Young County Judge Win Graham, Olney Mayor Rue Rogers, and many others. Many attended to show their appreciation for the hard work and sacrifice the members of the OVFD give each year to make the community safe.
