City issues proclamation to the Daughters of the American Revolution

 The women pictured above are part of the “DAR” organization, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a national organization that began in 1890,  “with the simple mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism,” according to Dar.org. “This nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education consists of over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the world. These vibrant, active women are the heart of the organization.” The website went on to say.

Women can become members by showing patriotism, interest in our history, and showing proof of their family line of having patriots in the American Revolution. You can become a member no matter what age, race, or ethnicity as long as you provide your family tree and history dating back to this time period. What do DAR members do and participate in you might ask? In communities all across the United States, DAR members participate in “restoring and maintaining historical sites,preserving genealogical records, artifacts and historical documents, locating, restoring and marking Revolutionary War patriot gravesites and headstones,supporting schools through donations and volunteer efforts, providing scholarships and awards to outstanding students throughout the country, promoting education and citizenship through youth programs, sponsoring American history essay contests for youth, providing volunteer time to assist military veterans, supporting America’s service personnel through a variety of programs,sponsoring special programs promoting the Constitution, celebrating with new citizens at naturalization ceremonies”.
