City to impound vehicles with no insurance

Olney police officers will soon be able to impound vehicles driven or abandoned without auto insurance under an ordinance approved on the first reading by the City Council March 28.

The council will take a final vote on Ordinance 07-22 at its April 11 meeting. Birbeck said that the ordinance fills a void in the City code to allow police to get uninsured cars off the streets.

“It’s pretty standard for cities to do this; Olney just didn’t have anything in place,” he said. “We are just catching up.”

The new ordinance allows an officer to get uninsured drivers off the street and forces them to acquire insurance before recovering their vehicles.

“If the officers stop them, they can impound the vehicle until they provide proof of financial responsibility. It also updates the old ordinances with respect to abandoned vehicles,” Birbeck told the council. Impounded vehicles will be towed to a yard in Gra
