City hires lifeguards, pool manager

The Olney City Council agreed to hire Kayla Glover to manage the new municipal swimming pool at Tom Griffin Park.

The Council also voted to hire five or six lifeguards at a rate of $10 per hour. Mrs. Glover will earn $15 per hour plus the proceeds of the snack bar, the Council decided.

The City received 11 applications for the lifeguard positions even though the pool’s opening date remains up in the air, City Secretary Tammy Hourigan said.

Heavy rains delayed construction on the pool and concession stand-restroom complex, Mayor Rue Rogers said.

The City hopes to open the pool on or before the July 4 holiday weekend, he said.

In the meantime, the new lifeguards must be certified, and the certifier has offered to hold classes locally -- perhaps at the Olney Country Club’s swimming pool, he said.

The Council set aside $14,714.26 to fund pay, pool chemicals and other expenses related to running to pool at its June 10 meeting.

The Council also discussed holding a “Splash Day,” when patrons can use the pool for free, and what to charge for admission.

Mayor Roger suggested that city officials canvas nearby cities with swimming pools to see what they are charging.

The Council discussed keeping the pool open on the weekends after school starts.
