Christmas Angels Spotted Around Olney

Christmas Angels Spotted Around Olney

Many of us are blessed with plenty of loved ones to celebrate the holidays. Lots of loved ones mean lots of gifts to open on that special and all too nostalgic day. But for the struggling addict, many times, all their bridges have been burned. It could take years before friends and family even talk to them. Until then (and even beyond), the House of Mercy (H.O.M.E.) board, other residents and staff are their family. We are the ones who encourage them to remain patient while on the “straight path” until that blessed day comes to reunite with loved ones.

We are called the House of Mercy because God’s mercy and love are revealed once we have reached our bottom, and H.O.M.E. is our only option. I know what some may be thinking: “why should I have mercy on someone who chose to screw up their own life?” Merciless Christians are a people who’ve forgotten how much mercy and grace was bestowed upon themselves by the Lord: for we all have fallen short of the glory of God. Additionally, I put it like this- we didn’t become addicts because we received the tools in life to succeed, and life was great. Some people were blessed with a different attitude and perseverance, which helped them get through life’s struggles without using drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, that is not the case for addicts.

But it isn’t about what we DID. Right? It’s about how we overcame- It’s about what God is doing with us and through us NOW. It gives me goosebumps to remember that every person “saved” by God through the blood of Christ was ALWAYS one of God’s children- even when they were steeped in sin and death- misunderstood by those around them.

We hope to be fortunate enough to provide a present for each resident at Christmas. Every penny of H.O.M.E.’s funds is tied to feeding and sheltering them until they become ready for re-entry into the workforce. Could you afford $25 this holiday season to help make Christmas at H.O.M.E. miraculous for a struggling individual? Please join me in making the holidays a little brighter for a H.O.M.E. resident. Knowing they have support from the community may mean all the difference to them- it certainly did for me!
