Chief Brief: Drug arrests

The OPD lobby will be open starting Monday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to noon, he said. The window will be staffed by a temporary employee who will also do some administrative tasks while dispatcher Brandy Blodgett recovers from an accident, he said.

“If you come in just remember this person is new,” he said. “But she is eager to help.”

Olney police put several people in jail last week on drug charges and busted another resident for attacking officers during a domestic violence call, Olney Police Chief Dan Birbeck said in his Friday briefing.

Police stopped two local residents driving down Main Street in a truck on Friday and charged each with possession of a controlled substance, he said.

In a separate incident, an Olney man was arrested after he struck Chief Birbeck who was responding to a domestic violence call at a residence. The man was charged with assault on a public servant, he said.

Chief Birbeck also attended the North Texas Police Chiefs Association meeting where he volunteered to help a company that makes law enforcement equipment improve the “go” bags they manufacture for emergency crews responding to large-scale events.

The company gave him sample bags to test in a mock emergency preparedness drill, he said.

“[I’m] partnering with them to see the best way to build these bags out,” he said. “This is one of my major passions and I have a lot of background in active shooter response and training for civilians and law enforcement.”

The Olney Country Club announced that it will partner with the Olney Police Department to hold a golf tournament to raise funds to finish the remodel of the Ranger College building into the new Olney Police Department headquarters.

The Law & Order Par 3 Golf Classic will be held on Nov. 16 at the Olney Country Club. The contest features a four-person scramble for $200 per team. All ages are welcome and the tournament also features a raffle, Olney Recreation Association President Landon Rowe said.
