Boy Scouts help with Fish Fry Fundraiser

The Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department hosted its annual Fish Fry Fundraiser Saturday, May 1, at the firehouse in Newcastle. The firehouse was filled to capacity with people from Newcastle and the surrounding areas.

“We fed more than 335 people, which is approximately 100 more than last year,” said Teresa Jones, treasurer for the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department. “We ran out of fish at 6:30 p.m. and had approximately 25 or 30 people still waiting in line,” Jones said.

Jones confirmed that the preliminary fundraising total exceeds $20,000 raised from dinner, donations and the silent auction. Jones said this is more money than they have ever raised. She said the proceeds would benefit the Newcastle Fire Department, and they will use the funds to make necessary building repairs and purchase equipment.

“Equipment is expensive. For example, one pump for the fire truck may cost between $6,000 and $8,000. So, we are so grateful to every who contributed to making this fundraiser successful,” Jones said.

The Boy Scouts of America (Newcastle Troop 763) was one of the highlights of the event. Many of the attendees commented on how courteous and helpful the Boy Scouts were by assisting the elderly with seating and offering refills of drinks and food.

“I am thankful to the Boy Scouts from Troop 763 for all their help. We’ve enjoyed reading the positive comments that people are posting on Facebook. They did an awesome job,” Jones said.

Jones said she and her husband have always been actively involved with the Boy Scouts. When recalling that they do service projects, they decided it would be a good idea to ask them to help with the fundraiser, allowing them to collect donations for their summer camp.

“As long as the Boy Scouts want to help us at this fundraising event, we will welcome them,” Jones concluded.
