Big Luv’s Celebrates Two Years of BBQ Love in Olney
The Olney Chamber of Commerce marked a milestone for a business with a big presence last week, awarding Big Luv’s BBQ a commendation for its second anniversary on Main Street — and for the steady line of customers that has become a familiar sight outside the restaurant.
Chamber Director Kimberly Smith presented a certificate to owners Barry and Ann Hodges in front of Big Luv’s, where the couple stood with their granddaughter, Emilia Jane, as regulars waved from passing cars.
The Hodges purchased the drive-through and patio formerly operated as Sylvia’s on Oct. 1, 2023, and vowed to offer the same breakfast that the former owners served, using the same recipes. Barry Hodges said the plan to stay loyal to Sylvia’s clientele - plus adding his 25 years of barbecue experience – has been a big hit with the community.
“It’s going wonderful,” Mr. Hodges said. “We’ve actually already surpassed our first two years — business and sales — and we’re having a great year this year.”
The restaurant, open four days a week, has built a following for breakfast tacos, barbecue plates and specials that include the delectable “brisket mac and cheese.” On busy evenings, Mr. Hodges said, the line of cars waiting can stretch close to 30 deep.
Mrs. Smith said the Chamber wanted to recognize not only the restaurant’s success, but its role in Olney’s downtown revival.
“They’ve done such a great job of taking over and keeping that same
idea (as Sylvia’s), but adding their quality and their own touch,” she said. “It’s so popular in town. When people come in from out of town, this is where they want to go. It really puts Olney on the map.”
She also pointed to Big Luv’s involvement in community events, including its participation in the Chamber’s annual tailgate, now in its second year.
Looking ahead, Mr. Hodges said the plan is simple: don’t fix what isn’t broken. The owners hope to enclose the open-air patio space next year to create more seating.
“We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.
Mr. Hodges said Olney has embraced the restaurant — and the family — since day one.
“These are hardworking, good people,” he said. “We love the community, and we feel like in two years we’ve really become part of it.”
