Bench honoring Graham

Bench honoring Graham student installed at county courthouse

A memorial bench honoring a Graham High School graduate was installed on the Young County courthouse lawn by the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus four years after the county approved the project.

County Commissioners approved the 2018 request by the family and friends of 19-year-old Harrison Brown, who was fatally stabbed at the University of Texas at Austin a year earlier. The Knights of Columbus Council pitched the idea to the commissioners and got an immediate thumbs up. The group raised money and had the bench built but the project languished during the COVID-19 pandemic. Precinct 1 Commissioner Stacy Creswell found the completed bench in his precinct warehouse when he took office in 2020. The Knights returned to Commissioners Court and secured a location for the memorial on the northwest corner of the town square. On Sept. 8, volunteers poured a concrete pad and set the bench on it.
