The Refuge Introduces Sensory Camp

The Refuge Christian Community Center added a new experience to its lineup of summer programs this year with the introduction of a sensory camp designed to help young children learn through touch, sound, sight, smell and taste.

The first session, held June 8, welcomed a group of 4- and 5-year-olds eager to explore a variety of hands-on sensory stations. Children dipped their hands into plastic containers filled with beads, sand, foam, shredded paper and other materials, discovering different textures and sensations while they played.

While the activities looked like simple fun, organizers said sensory play serves an important developmental purpose. Stimulating the senses helps young children build neural connections in the brain that support cognitive development, emotional regulation, language acquisition and social skills.

The camp is part of The Refuge’s continuing effort to offer enriching summer experiences for local children. Additional sensory camp sessions are planned for both preschool-age children and students in first through third grades.

Upcoming dates include June 28 and July 16 for older children, and July 13 for 4- and 5-yearolds. Registration for the July 13 session closes July 6.

Space is limited to 10 students per session. Parents interested in enrolling their children or learning more about the program may contact The Refuge at 940-564-4673.
