Yes, It Is Still February!

Yes, It Is Still February!

A few years ago on a snow day, I looked out the door and saw this scene. I grabbed my phone and took this beautiful photo through the window! If I had opened the door the cardinal would have flown away, and I would have lost this beautiful photo forever.

The joy of catching a bird in place is difficult, but if you succeed… that is the joy of a photographer and an instant response.

As I write this, it is February, 2025. I see comments by people on FB counting the days until spring. But as we know, we have no control over the seasons. It will become spring when it becomes spring! As I think about it, are we ever actually happy with the season of the moment?

We are anxious to get past February, but then we have to deal with the strong winds of March! We wonder if the winds will ever stop and get on to the best of spring—April and May? Some of my favorite trips have been to the Texas Hill Country in April and May. Exploring the beautiful wild flowers of which only Texas can boast, is the best.

But wait…wasn’t it May, 1951, that a tornado swooped down, and made a large path through Olney — northwest to southeast — leaving our little town in shock and devastation? So much for “April showers brings May flowers” mentality! As we saw in May 1951, May is not always perfect!

So, what time of year is perfect? June may be nice, but then comes July and August! No-one wants to be in north Texas in the heat of July and August. I have heard people who pass through north Texas in August say that it is the brownest, ugliest area of Texas they have ever seen!

Well, after the heat of summer each year, we can at least look forward to fall activities with ball games, and look forward to the holiday season.

But wait…that puts us right back where we are…it is still February, and we are looking forward to Spring!
