Tornado simulator at OHM

The headlines in the Olney Enterprise summarized a devastating event that changed the town of Olney forever. The headline: “Two Dead, Scores Injured in the wake of Tornado” along with a subsequent headline: “54 Homes Demolished By Devasting Twister” paints a picture of a catastrophe that impacted the quality of life for the residents of Olney. Olney Heritage Museum is bringing those headlines to life with the tornado simulator and exhibit that will be on display soon.

Why exhibit a tornado simulator? The purpose of the simulator is twofold: it is an educational tool for the curious, and it is fun to watch.  The tornado exhibit will simulate a vortex, which is required to conserve energy and momentum along with other synthetic mechanisms to form a tornado. I must admit that the concept is over my head, but I am always fascinated to see this act of nature recreated repeatedly. It never gets dull.

Stay connected with us on Facebook, visit the website or drop by 213 E. Main Street in Olney to find out the latest news about the arrival of the exhibit. Once the OHM staff installs the exhibit, you will be able to view actual simulations as well as read about the three significant tornadoes that impacted Olney. Also, we would love to hear your stories about how the tornadoes affected your family. If you have photos you are willing to lend or donate, please reach out to us.
