Baylor County Museum

The next museum on the list for the Regional Museum Alliance series is the Baylor County Museum (BCM), located at 116 N. Washington Street in Seymour. The BCM has a vast number of historical artifacts, memorabilia and other odds and ends that give a detailed history of how things progressed for Baylor County and what it was like there as far back as the 1800s.

The museum has occupied their current space since 2001 and relies solely on city funding and donations. Janice Thornhill, a volunteer with the BCM, said, “Without the help from the city of Seymour, the museum would not make it.” The BCM is always looking for funding for the museum. If you’re interested in donating funds or time, you can give the museum a call at 940-889-6780.

Thornhill says the museum is always free and hours are Monday through Friday 1 pm to 5 pm. Weekends the museum is closed, but may be opened for special occasions and family reunions. As Thornhill gave the tour, you could hear the pride in her voice. She had a total mastery of the rich history stored and display in the BCM.

The BCM webpage states the BCM has permanent exhibits ranging from Native American artifacts, Seymour High School, scrapbooks and memorabilia. The history of Baylor County is well represented, according to the BCM webpage. One of the main features of the museum is the military section, with a great many photos and artifacts of and about the men and women who have served in the military from Baylor County.

When asked what Thornhill thought of the museum, she stated, “Well, I just think it’s a wonderful place for research. And for just getting a feel for what it was like for our ancestors.” One of Thornhill’s favorite anonymous quotes is, “You cannot have a great future without understanding and celebrating your past.” A couple main events for the museum will be coming up this fall. The first is the “Stroll ‘N Roll,” scheduled for September 8, which is a day of walking the downtown area to experience Seymour’s museums, dining, theater and parks. The second event is the “Veterans Reception,” which is held on the day after November 11th each year, from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. The event is located at the BCM. This event’s purpose is to honor those that have served and are currently serving.
