The Story Behind the Photo - No. 3

Years ago we went to an auction at an old farm west of Megargel. One of the amazing things I saw was an old truck setting among brush & tree trunks. There was even a tree trunk growing up through the cab of the truck.

A very interesting story was told about the old truck. It seems that the man bought the truck during the Great Depression (1929-39), intending to make payments over time. It was hard times, and money was short and it became impossible to make the payments. When he found he could not make the payments, he notified the company to come pick up the truck. They never came, and he never moved or drove the truck again.

I understand after the auction, the truck was moved to the Archer County Museum in Archer City.

I loved the old well at the old farm house. In its day it was the source of water for the house. Imagine having to go to the well and draw up a bucket of water before you could cook a meal, wash dishes, wash clothes, or mop the kitchen floor?

In our modern world water is in abundance, even in the rural areas. I have a water well with an electric pump that is helpful in watering the yard and plants, and I don’t even have to depend on it for house use. I am thankful for Ft. Belknap Water Co-op for water that is piped to my house from the Graham Lake!

The Great Depression was a terrible time in history. Our younger generation has no understanding of what the older generations lived through during those years. The mental concept was —don’t throw anything away—you might not get another one!

Even though I grew up after the Depression era, that mind set was always very strong in my generation.
