Prickly Cactus offers local shopping option

The Prickly Cactus, the new clothing and gift boutique in town, grew out of Delfina Garcia’s love of costume jewelry and a talent for gathering must-have items for her customers.

Tucked away at 301 N. Avenue C, the Prickly Cactus features clothing, jewelry, purses, Cubs and Bobcat gear, shoes, housewares, lawn ornaments and many great gift items.

Mrs. Garcia, of Frisco, and her husband, Jimmy, an Olney native, opened the store in July – about four years after she started selling Paparazzi jewelry online to customers from all over the country who tuned in to her Facebook Live demonstrations.

Mrs. Garcia, who until recently worked at Newcastle Independent School District, said she was lured into selling Paparazzi in 2020 by a friend who knew how much she spent on the jewelry.

“She said, ‘You spend a lot of money. You can buy pieces for you and pieces to sell and make a profit off it,’” Mrs. Garcia said.

“Once I started doing Paparazzi, my customers were asking if I would sell anything else,” she said. “I gradually started bringing in different stuff, toys for kids, and … Christmas things, and little items for the house. I gradually started going to clothes.”

The operation took up a room in their home, then moved to a “she shed” in the yard. Business has been brisk, so she and Mr. Garcia decided to take a risk and open a full store in July.

She customizes tumblers and makes wooden earrings with sublimation printing, and will order custom t-shirts, she said. “I do a lot of customized orders,” she said. “If there is a certain print or something [customers want] I can get it. I try to get an idea of what I need to have to accommodate Olney.”

Her merchandise is priced to sell - so much so that it is hard to walk out empty-handed.

“I figure I’ll keep the prices cheap and have people in and out enough to where I can get things that people want so they won’t have to travel to Wichita Falls,” she said.

The Prickly Cactus is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday- Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.
