Parent-Child Golf Tournament

The Olney Country Club Parent-Child Golf Tournament was on Saturday, June 20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The early morning rain did not curb the excitement of the participants. Despite the muddy golf course, more than 28 teams forged ahead.

The event organizer and co-chair Kathy Shifflett said the parent-child golf tournament has been a staple in the community for more than 30 years, sand she was satisfied with the turnout this year. “Considering the Coronavirus, I am pleased with the number of people who signed up. This year we had 28 participants compared to the 38 participants last year, which was not a significant decrease,” Shifflett said. “We have people come from all over to play in this tournament. This year people came from as far as Jacksboro and Wichita Falls.”

Tim Neill organizes and co-chairs the event with Kathy. Throughout the event he kept a close eye on the game while assisting his wife Charlotte with the preparation of the meal. The Neills donates the food to the club and does not charge anything for the preparation.

Shifflett, who worked at Olney Country Club for 11 years before retiring, said the best thing about the tournament is the participation from tiered generations of grandparents, grandchildren, sons and daughters and their children. “This tournament is a way to bring children back home and, in some cases, keep them from leaving. To me, this is the most special thing about this tournament. Also, it is a way to keep kids from getting into trouble,” Shifflett said.
