Painting the town Brie’s latest mural

Local artist and photographer Brie Dinwiddie Watson took some time from her photography and art classes to paint a mural in downtown Olney on the building located across from the newspaper office and museum located at 213 E. Main St.

Linda and Jim Wade, owners of the building, said, “We’re happy to provide the local artist with a canvas to express her artwork on.”

The mural is a rustic desert scene, with cacti, a colorful sunset and a quote from Pink Floyd. Watson explained why she wanted to paint a mural.

“I’ve just always had a dream of painting murals, I’m sort of a daydreamer, and it’s been on my bucket list, something I wanted to do when I was younger.”

In response to why she painted a desert scene, Watson replied, “I fell in love with the desert. Joshua Tree Saguaro National Park. It’s just, I don’t know, there’s something magical about the desert, and so that was why I chose the cactus.”

In regard to the quote above the mural, “How I Wish, How I Wish You Were Here,” it refers to the lyrics in a Pink Floyd song. “I’m a big Pink Floyd fan. I love the song, but music is important to me. I love music, and I really wanted [the quote] to be something that could speak to somebody. Also, I feel like everybody has somebody that they wish was here or that they missed,” Watson said.

When Watson is not busy painting murals, she is teaching art classes based out of Archer & Gunn Mercantile, a business that was recently opened in Olney. For those who are interested in attending one of the art classes, please give Archer & Gunn a call at 940-279-3986. “The art class is a great way to get out and socialize and learn to paint,” Watson sad.

In closing, Watson said, “I think everybody has their own little creative outlet. My grandmother was an artist. My aunt is an artist. I started painting a wall when I was 17, and I’m very visual. I’ve always just been an artist, I guess you could say.”
