Olney Heritage Museum Tornado Simulator

The tornado simulator exhibit is open, finally. The simulator is one of the newest exhibits at Olney Heritage Museum located at 213 E. Main Street in Olney, TX.

When I was a little girl, I recall having a strong curiosity about hurricanes, tornados and thunderstorms. I had no idea that this science was called meteorology, nor did I understand how to connect the dots and make a living chasing storms. One of the reasons why I love the tornado exhibit is the way it piques a child’s imagination while answering those “How do I” questions.

Not only does the young observer have the opportunity to see a simulated tornado, he or she can view the details about studying meteorology as well as the career path associated with it. In addition, there are QR codes that open educational videos about tornados. To bring it all home, there are newspaper clippings from archived issues of Olney Enterprise that highlight the disastrous tornado that occurred in 1951 along with photos.

Some of the interesting headlines state “Two Dead, Scores Injured in Wake of Tornado” “54 Homes Demolished By Devastating Twists.” Come visit the museum to read the details that follow these attention-getting headlines. These stories and this experience may open the door to a remarkable career possibility for your child.

If you’re interested in viewing the simulated tornado, please call the museum in advance to give us time to schedule a docent who will be able to simulate the tornado. Our business hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p..m. All other times are by appointment only. Our phone number is 940-227-4362.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Olney Heritage Museum where history comes alive.
