Olney American Legion seeks OHS students for Oratorical Scholarship Contest

As the new school year approaches, Olney American Legion Post 414 is gearing up to offer students an exciting opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills and compete for scholarship money. The Post is inviting local high school students to participate in the annual American Legion Oratorical Contest, a prestigious event that promotes knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution.

The Oratorical Contest, a long-standing tradition within the American Legion that dates back to 1938. The contest challenges students to deliver a prepared speech on a constitutional topic, as well as an impromptu address on a randomly assigned constitutional amendment. This competition not only hones public speaking abilities but also encourages young people to engage deeply with the foundational principles of American government. The topics for this year are as follows; Amendment I, Amendment VII, Amendment XVIII and Amendment XXVI.

“We’re thrilled to kick off the 2024/2025 school year with this meaningful contest,” said Chris Garcia, Commander of Post 414. “This will be the first year in a very long time that the Olney American Legion Post has participated in this contest, and it is one of the many ways we are working at giving back to the community. It’s also one of our scholarship programs that we have been pushing.”

In addition to the experience and accolades, the winner at the local level is guaranteed at least a $500 scholarship. Students will begin by preparing a speech that ranges from eight to ten minutes, focusing on the duties and responsibilities of American citizens as outlined in the Constitution. Participants will also deliver a three to five-minute speech on an assigned topic, announced only minutes before their presentation.

The local level winner will advance to the district level contest, and potentially division, state, and national competitions, with the chance to win even more in scholarship money. The national champion receives a $25,000 scholarship, with additional awards for runners-up. The competition provides a platform for students to develop their public speaking skills, enhance their understanding of civic duty, and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Post 414 encourages all interested students to sign up and start preparing. “Whether you’re a seasoned speaker or just starting out, this contest is a great way to challenge yourself and learn more about our nation’s Constitution,” said Garcia.

Registration for the Oratorical Contest is now open. Students, parents, and educators interested in learning more about the contest and registration details are encouraged to contact the Olney American Legion Post 414 directly. The first round of the competition is expected to take place in the early fall, and deadlines for registration will be announced soon.

Let’s make this school year memorable with inspiring speeches and a deeper understanding of our nation’s Constitution!
