It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas

With all the craziness this year due to Covid-19, Olney really needed some normality this holiday season. The Olney Chamber of Commerce held Olney’s first annual tree lighting event. The event drew a large crowd from Olney and the surrounding area.

The night started with Chad Edgington (pastor of First Baptist Church of Olney) and Christopher Widner (Widner Productions) leading the crowd with some old-fashioned Christmas carols. Newly-elected Olney Mayor, Rue Rogers, also President of Keep Olney Beautiful, gave a heartfelt speech filled with what makes Olney great.

The Chamber announced Hometown Coffee and Tea as the Olney Business of the year for 2019. Hometown Coffee and Tea is owned and operated by local resident Holly Bailey. Bailey could not attend the event, so a representative of Hometown Coffee and Tea was on hand to officially light the Olney Christmas tree. After many “oohs” and “ahs” from onlookers at the event, Edgington had a group of children come on stage to lead the singing of “Here Comes Santa Claus” to help urge Santa to make an appearance at the Gazebo (where the tree lighting event took place).

Santa opted to make his appearance in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage owned and driven by Jason Pack of Stewart’s Grocery. Santa had two special elves, Jaden Jacoba and Sarah Roach, by his side to help corral all the children to the stage so they could whisper what they wanted for Christmas to Santa. This event was well attended and the air in Olney was filled with laughter, Christmas cheer and smiles by all.
