Happy 60th anniversary, Dennis and Sue Brown!
Their families thought they were spending the day at Six Flags or going fishing. In reality, they were heading for Mexico to get married! Dennis and Sue met at Graham High School during the 1963-1964 school year. During his senior year, Dennis noticed a pretty new sophomore named Sue. They started dating and knew the Lord had brought them together. The young couple talked about the future and their plans to get married. Dennis and Sue left Graham at 6:00 a.m., on the morning of August 17, 1964, and set out for the border. Unfortunately, as they got close to their destination, Dennis’ old Rambler broke down. A nice family stopped to help and towed them into a machine shop in Del Rio. Dennis and Sue explained the purpose for their trip and someone called a taxi to take them across the Mexican border to Ciudad Acuna. A jovial taxi driver was all smiles as he dropped them off to be married, with the assurance he would be back in about 30 minutes. They were married, although they could not understand Spanish, and the cab driver picked them up just as he said. When they arrived in Del Rio, at the machine shop, they were greeted with laughter and applause. The car repair was finished and they started the trip back to their new life in Arlington. Their first adventure as a married couple was a success! Dennis and Sue’s marriage is grounded in Joshua 24:15d, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
After three years, they welcomed their first daughter, Shelly, into the world. Their second daughter, Darla, came along the following year. Dennis and Sue laid the foundation for their girls to know the Lord and provided a loving home. Over the years, they welcomed sons-in-law Tony and Charles into the family. Dennis and Sue were overjoyed when they became grandparents to Braxton and Riley. They enjoyed taking the boys on many great adventures across the U.S. and still enjoy going to Colorado and playing games with them at their home in Olney.
The Lord blessed Dennis with a successful career as a Farmers Insurance agent and Sue with a wonderful teaching career at Red Oak ISD. He held them up during the most difficult time in their lives with the loss of their daughter, Shelly. Dennis and Sue continue to provide a wonderful example of a marriage that honors the Lord and each other. They have made many wonderful memories over the last 60 years and will experience many more. Their love for each other is greater now than when they started their trip to Mexico 60 years ago.
We love y’all and HAPPY 60th ANNIVERSARY!
Love, Darla, Tony, Braxton, Riley and Charles
