FBCO Fish Fry Raises Summer Camp Tuition
The Second Annual Big Fish Fry & Opry at First Baptist Church of Olney proved to be a resounding success, raising more than $5,000 to help send local students to summer camp in New Mexico.
Pastor Chad Edgington said the March 29 fundraiser exceeded expectations, drawing a large crowd to the church’s Fellowship Hall and bringing in generous donations.
“We raised over $5,000 — it was one of the biggest successes we’ve had overall,” Pastor Edgington said. “There was great participation and it was just a great time, and people seemed like it.”
The event featured heaping plates of crispy fried catfish, hush-puppies, fries, coleslaw, beans, and dessert, all served by the students who will attend camp this summer.
Organizers suggested a $15 donation per plate, but Pastor Edgington said many attendees gave even more to support the cause.
The fellowship hall was packed throughout the evening, with students serving between 300 and 400 plates to diners who filled the room with conversation and laughter.
The event also drew visitors from outside of Olney who came to enjoy the food, fellowship, and live music.
“The music was really good,” Pastor Edgington said. “People came from out of town to be here, and it was just a great atmosphere.”
The Fish Fry & Opry is a key fundraiser for First Baptist’s youth ministry. Proceeds will help cover costs for around 35 students and adult sponsors to attend youth camp in Glorieta, New Mexico, from June 11–15.
The camp experience includes church services, outdoor activities, and themed nights designed to foster spiritual growth and community.
“It’s a great opportunity,” Pastor Edgington said before the event. “We’ll be taking kids who rarely get the chance to leave the state.”
