The Bassinet

On January 5, 1932, this bassinet held a newborn baby boy by the name Neil Larimore. That was 90 years ago.

After cradling a number of family babies through the years, the bassinet was wrapped and stored in the attic. A few years ago I retrieved it from the attic, and have it on display for the family to enjoy.

So, what do we do with our collected family heirlooms those precious “treasures” that have been protected and saved so future generations can experience a small touch of family history? Maybe grandmother’s beautiful pieces of needlework, special pieces of glassware protected through the years, or even a wedding dress dating back 100 years.

I have my great aunt’s china case from the early 1900s. Through the early years, It traveled in the back of a wagon numerous times without breaking. The rounded-shaped glass is not replaceable, and I look on with fright sometimes when someone’s chair moves a little too close to it. There are also numerous family pieces displayed in the case.

I often hear people say, “I have a collection of beautiful family heirlooms from the past, but none of my children want them.” It seems that the younger generation doesn’t feel a connection to the their family history. Will it all be lost over time? I I hope not.

Neil looked forward to turning 90 in Jan. Reaching 90 would be a milestone in Larimore men’s family history. The Lord took Neil home on Sept. 19, 2021, just 3 3 1/2 months before his 90th birthday.
