WILL B.
Never did I think I would find myself at 56 and alone. My career is in that golden spot, I am financially secure, or secure enough not to have to worry about rent or where my next meal is coming from, with enough left over to have some fun, I love the house I live in, and my truck is paid for.
All these things are positive, but there’s little point if I have no one to share them with. I have dated a few times since my divorce a few years ago and only once did I get close enough to want to marry again. Sadly, distance and other complications didn’t make that possible.
While I have lots of acquaintances here in Olney and numerous friends online whom I game with (current addiction of choice: Call of Duty), I still haven’t made the kind of close friends who would invite me to their home for get-togethers. I’m still looking for the kind of person I can create and share memories with. bring this up for only for the many single people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, but also for the elderly. I care a lot about the seniors in this community and none of us - young-ish or elderly – probably never thought we would find ourselves single at a later stage of life. But here we are.
That’s why places like the Young County Olney Senior Cub Center, or the Cub Center as most of us just lovingly call it, are so crucial. And not just for seniors. It’s a great place for regular social engagement, or a friendly conversation over lunch. For many people, it is the highlight of their day.
Church is also crucial in a rural area like ours. Our church families are the closest thing to having your own and is a great blessing to look forward to week in and out.
If you know someone who is single and isolated and particularly seniors, let’s make sure to check up on them and invite them into your life, social club or church. If you are reading, please reach out to the Olney Cub Center to see how you can help. Your contribution can be financial, donating time, or just showing up or lunch or game days and enjoying the company of those who call their Cub Center their place to hang.
The Cub Center can be reached through Facebook- Young County Olney Senior Cub Center, phone-(940) 564-2782 or website-olneyscc.org.
This is Will B saying, these are my peeps. Drop by for lunch and say Hi sometime!
