Cubs, Lady Cubs Host District Games for Annual Steven Harvey Fundraiser

The Olney High School Cubs and Lady Cubs hosted district match-ups against the Seymour Lady Panthers and the Petrolia Pirates, respectively, for the annual Steven Harvey Fundraiser on March 27.

The Steven Harvey Memorial Baseball Scholarship was started in 2004 by Jeff and Tami Harvey and Steven’s family. Steven was killed in a car accident on May 7, 2004, in Muleshoe, Texas. Steven was a lifelong resident of Olney and graduated from OHS in 2002. He attended college and received his certificate of completion to be a lineman at South Plains College in Levelland in May of 2004, just before the accident.

Besides his family and friends, one of his greatest loves was baseball. Steven started playing as soon as he could throw a ball and continued to play until he graduated high school.

He was quick and had a great arm. He played second base and shortstop for the Olney Cubs. His number was retired in 2005, only to be brought out of retirement if his younger brother, Cody, wanted to wear the number, which of course he wore with pride!

This scholarship was started to help senior boys who played baseball for the Cubs to further their education. “When we select the recipients, we look for traits that were in Steven’s personality,” Tami Harvey said. “He was kind, funny, had great sportsmanship, and showed true leadership to his team. This year’s meal will be the 22nd year we have put on the BBQ in Steven’s honor. We have been able to give out over $60,000 worth of scholarships. Of course, none of this would be possible without the blessing, support, and donations we have received from our family, friends, and the amazing Olney community.”

The Lady Cubs fell short of the win for the day against rival Lady Panthers and will play next on April 7, at Petrolia.

The Cubs had another hard-fought game and fell short of the win against rival Pirates and play next on April 3, at the Seymour Panthers.

Fight on, Cubs and Lady Cubs!
