City Cleanup April 30 - May 7

Spring is here, and residents ready to part with old appliances or other unwanted items during their household sprucing will have help from City workers during the annual Olney City Cleanup Week from Saturday, April 30 to Saturday, May 7.

During that week, City trucks will patrol Olney’s residential streets to pick up large items and bagged trash for free and without an appointment.

“Cleanup Week is a good time for everybody if they’ve got old appliances, debris, bagged leaves or junk they would like to get rid of, now is the time to do it,” said Interim City Administrator Arpegea Pagsuberon. “During Cleanup Week you just need to set your stuff out and we will come pick it up.”

The items must be placed on the front curb and not in alleys or beside dumpsters, said Pagsuberon. The City will post a list of items the City will accept on its Facebook page, she said. That list will include household appliances, furniture, limbs, debris, bagged leaves and other “general junk,” she said.

The City will not pick up cement, batteries or paint, and appliances must have freon removed and properly disposed of before pickup, Pagsuberon said.

Residents can take old tires to the convenience station at 5930 Olney Road or wait for the tire disposal event later in the month, she said.

City residents with active and current water bills can have one load of brush and limbs hauled away for free each month outside of Cleanup Week. A load measures 8-feet by 5 feet by 5 feet – approximately the size of a pickup truck bed. The City normally charges $23 plus tax and requires residents to make a reservation to have large items picked up.

City leaders are pushing to keep the town looking smart, and wanted to remind residents that they no longer have workers driving the streets removing curbside junk.

“I think it’s important that people know that you can’t just leave stuff on the curb,” Police Chief Dan Birbeck said. “You have to call the City to come and pick it up. A lot of people think we still have people roving, looking for it, and we don’t. That process stopped because it was a waste of resources and time.”

Residents who miss their chance for free trash removal during Cleanup Week can contact the City at 940- 276-2011 to schedule a pickup, and provide their name, utility service address and a phone number. Residents who don’t have water service can come into City Hall to schedule and pay for pickups, Pagsuberon said.
