Sports Talk with Charles Ramsey

My co-host on Lawdog Sports, Cory Hogue, accuses me of having “get off my lawn moments,” which is referencing the Clint Eastwood movie “Grand Torino,” in which he points a rifle at some ruffians and utters the phrase in his famous gravelly tone.

Cory might be partially correct, but it applies more to sports in this day and time.

Phrases like “run the ball,” “tackle,” “take the check down,” and my personal favorite, “what are you celebrating for?”

I realize the athletes I regularly watch (from high school to professional) have been brought up with different priorities and values when it comes to playing competitive sports than when I was young. (For the record, I am just a tad over 50 and can still program my smart television)

I think the main theme of these phrases I utter vehemently on any given Friday through Sunday has as much to do with patience and humility as anything. I feel like players in this day and time, particularly in football and on offense, are looking to dial up a sixteen-point play to pull off a miraculous comeback or extend a lead. But, if you look at most comebacks in sports, they generally happen when a team sticks with the game plan and allows momentum to swing to their side without attempting desperate plays.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is why I love option football. The plays are designed to wear on an opponent and cause them to make mistakes, thus seizing momentum. In the movie “Remember the

Titans,” head Coach Herman Boone compared option football to Novocain by saying, “Keep applying and let it work.

My point is to stay patient and wait for the positive results to appear and remember there is never a sixteen-point play, only diligence and staying the course.

Another thing that is afforded guys my age is the ability to see where you came from and some of the places you pulled yourself up from, which always helps with perspective.
