Sports Talk with Charles Ramsey

Football is the ultimate team sport. Captain Obvious here, but it really emphasizes that philosophy when you watch teams week in and week out have success or failure because of a team and not the one player.

I particularly like to point out how option football is the ultimate example of my leadoff statement, but I realize I am preaching to the choir with our readers here at the Olney Enterprise. Fear the Veer! Right!?

However, when you consider that for each given play to succeed or fail, it relies on 11 players each doing their job and having individual success for the unit as a whole to have a successful play.

Once again, I realize that I am stating the obvious, but we really are entering an era where other sports don’t exemplify this as much as football.

When I read about these college football players or, heck, even sometimes high school seniors cashing in on their name, image and likeness, I can see where the emphasis on a team can get skewed. These players making money while they are “amateurs” need to remember that they are only as marketable as their success on the field, and that depends on 10 other players doing their job and being willing to support their higher-profile teammates.

I am tuned in to where this all goes because throughout the last 50 years of college athletics and the concept of “amateurism,” I have always known that bigtime players get big-time perks, but now we all get to see what it is they actually are receiving.

Brining this point back around to something pertinent to our region of coverage, I really do like to see teams that utilize the Together Everyone Achieves More (T.E.A.M.) concept because those make for much more rewarding experiences as fans.
