Red vs. White, Panther scrimmages ready Cubs for the season

This year’s Cub football team will feature several seasoned players and a new coach as former Defensive Coordinator Jason Powers takes over the top spot. Coach Powers said he will continue with the Cubs’ ground game but will add more passing into the mix at the right time.

The Cubs brought in a new defensive coordinator, David Carney, who has many years of college coaching experience. Other coaches for the Cub football team are Eric Symank, Braden Williams and Casey Keeter.

The Red vs. White game mixed Varsity and Junior Varsity players on both teams. The coaches were eyeing and evaluating players closely to decide which players would be best in which positions. The scrimmage went to the red team, as the defense controlled and overran the white team most of the game.

Jose Castillo was a big part of the red team’s defense. Castillo lined up as a defensive back and could not be contained, breaking through the line continuously, forcing the quarterback to scramble and often sacking him. Castillo is a player to keep your eye on this season and will no doubt give opposing quarterbacks nothing but trouble.

The QB1 spot is being sought after by returning Cub veteran players Jacob Hernandez and Camron McComack. Both players are a great match for the position and offer something unique. Hernandez is a great scrambler for the run option and Mc-Comack has a great arm for the passing game. There is a good possibility the QB1 Spot will be shared by both players. Keep an eye out for more passing this year for big plays down field. There are many returning veteran Cubs this year and as the season proceeds the Enterprise will highlight these Cubs as they rise through the ranks. The Cubs are looking good to go deep into the playoffs.

Coach Powers said the Cubs played well in the scrimmage against the Seymour Panthers considering that the Cubs’ flexbone offensive strategy takes time to see results.

“Offensively we did really, really well, scrimmages are not ideal for a team that runs flexbone because we get 12 plays and a lot of times flexbone teams take 12 plays to score,” he said. “Defensively, we were doing a good job of being in the right places, now we need to make plays when we get there. Offensively we’re in the right spots defensively … Now we just got to make plays.

“We will continue to share the QB1 spot between Jacob Hernandez and Camron Mccomack right now, they’ll both keep getting reps,” he added. “They’re going to take wear and tear on their body as the season goes on, so if one of them gets nicked up later in the season, the other one can fill in and we’re not going to miss a beat. They both start on defense as well, so it’ll keep both of them healthy and fresh all year.”
