Olney Cubs vs Archer

On Oct. 29, the Olney Cubs traveled to Archer City to knock helmets with the Wildcats. The outcome was to help determine the playoff standings for postseason play. The Cubs fought hard with plenty of determination but failed to secure the win, losing to the Wildcats 28-49.

The Cubs’ offense saw another week of critical mistakes but kept battling back with each possession. The defense played strong but missed several big stops resulting in Wildcat points quickly adding up.The following are highlights from four quarters of Friday Night Lights.

The only scores lighting the scoreboard in the first quarter came from a 38-yard blocked kicked by the Wildcats, which was run in for six and a successful extra point and a 21-yard run, with a successful extra point to bring Archer City to 14-Cubs 0 ending first-quarter play.

The Cubs started the second quarter pushing down the field ending with a two-yard touchdown push by #5 Gatlin Guy, the failed two-point conversion. The Wildcats began an aerial assault with an 11-yard touchdown pass and a successful extra point. The Wildcats defense stopped the Cubs’ offense and fired off more passing ending the drive with a 35-yard touchdown pass and a failed extra point. The Wildcats finished the first half with a combination of ground and air attacks ending with a nine-yard touchdown pass and a successful extra point, ending the first half with a score of Cubs 6-Wildcats 34.

The second half had the Wildcats slowly pushing down the field with the ground attack, eating away at the clock. The Wildcats ended their possession with a 30-yard touchdown run and a successful extra point. The Cubs’ defense stepped up, and after applying pressure on the Wildcat offense, the Wildcats coughed up the ball, which Cub defender #68 Luis Castillo recovered. The Cubs’ offense took over and dug deep, pushing back down the field ending with an explosive run by #5 Gatlin Guy for a touchdown run after a 40-yard run in; #21 Cole Turner was successful with the extra point. The Wildcats continued with the ground game eating away at the clock, but the Cubs’ defense held them, and the Cubs took possession of the ball but failed to score. The Cubs punted to the Wildcats, which ended up pinning the Wildcats on the 5-yard line. The Wildcats ended the district game with a 95-yard run good for six and a successful two-point conversion. #5 Gatlin Guy had 170 yards rushing and four touchdowns, #22 Jovani Rockmore had 145 yards rushing, #21 Cole Turner had five tackles/ 3 assists, 2 PATS, two kickoffs with totaling 52-yards and three punts for 23 yards.
