Will B. Celebrating

With my birthday recently just passed it got me thinking about and remembering past birthdays. When I was just a young’un, I can remember some pretty spectacular parties. One of my favorite birthdays was my Tigger theme party. I was absolutely bonkers for Tigger when I was really young. I even have a Tigger tattoo on my ankle. No judgment please! Ha Ha! I have a photo somewhere from an album I scanned a while back. I was wearing a Tigger mask, Tigger costume, the cake had Tigger, the tablecloth had Tigger, I think you get the point.

After about 12 or 13, my birthday was mostly forgotten for whatever reason. It became a day of disappointment for the most part. That changed when I met my wife. We began a tradition that has lasted about 21 years now. We celebrate birthday month. We never were able to have kids, so of course we always spoiled each other. It’s not a month of big expensive gifts. It’s little presents or things here and there throughout the month just to let the other know how special our birthdays are to each other. Maybe a Hometown coffee one day, a card or flowers another day, maybe a special night out, you get the drift of it. Of course, there are one or two extravagant gifts as well.

Birthdays don’t have to involve expensive gifts. Sometimes it’s about the thought behind it that makes it so special. My favorite birthday as an adult was about 4 years ago. My wife took me out for a day of indulgence. We did some shopping for clothes, sneakers in particular (which I am fond of), then we went to central market to pick out ingredients for a special dinner. I picked a dry aged ribeye about two or three inches thick and must of weighed three or four pounds, a specialty beer I had not tried, some Kona coffee beans that are about 100 dollars per pound and worth every penny, fresh baked pumpernickel (my favorite bread) and some pastries from the bakery among other things. It was such a great birthday.

This year my wife took me for a repeat performance of that day, and it was every bit as great as that day was. I have had many birthdays over the years with my wife that were very special just because it involved us doing simple things together. Even when short on funds, simple things done to make someone feel special on their birthday will have a huge impact. Some things you could do are cook their favorite meal, a hand-written note or card, maybe a nice massage or a day at the movies. The important thing is to just make sure they feel special on their birthday, whether it’s expensive or cheap won’t matter as much as long as they know you went out of the way to make their day special.

This is Will B. saying make someone’s birthday special.
