Enjoying Basketball

Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is soon upon us which means basketball season is in full swing. Football is deeply rooted in my heart and basketball is all about full-tilt excitement. There is nothing like the nonstop action of basketball and I love to support our Cubs and Lady Cubs as they battle their way to the playoffs.

This year seems to be a rebuilding year for the Varsity Lady Cubs but that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of nail-biting games and plenty of emotions for the Lady Cubs. As I watched the Lady Cubs battle against the seasoned previous championship team from Throckmorton in weeks past I couldn’t help but feel my heart go out to this new and younger team.

Ellie Hinson seemed like their only seasoned vet on the court for that game and as the game went on, I could clearly see the frustration building along with her emotions, but more importantly I saw other things as well: heart, grit, determination, fight and leadership.

As Hinson battles on the court for her senior year she will be the leader of these Lady Cubs and all her teammates will be looking to her for her valuable veteran skills on the court, Hinson is a great leader and will fill that role perfectly. I am proud of her and can’t wait to watch her lead these Lady Cubs through the season. The Lady Cubs play with their hearts on their sleeves and it is one of the reasons I enjoy watching them. The Lady Cubs have a great coach this year, Coach Reese, who has excellent experience and just what this rebuilding team needs in a coach.

The Cubs season starts a little later due to football so I must anxiously wait to see how they are going to do this year and which veterans will return to lead the fighting Cubs.

The Cubs have a new coach this year, Coach Symank, who brings a great deal of experience to the team. Coach Symank is a returning Olneyite as well and I always find a special place in my heart for the ones who come back to Olney to give back to the kids like this.

I believe we still will have four or five veterans playing for the varsity Cubs team but will have to wait and see as the season progresses.

Other things I love about basketball season are the closeness of the community as they pack the stands elbow-to-elbow, enjoying hot cocoa and other treats that are somehow better when it’s freezing outside and we are all warm and snug in the gym watching an exciting game while talking about things that have happened and things to come. This is Will B saying, see yah at the game, Lets Go Cubs and Lady Cubs you are the makers of your own destiny!
