There is something to be said about the simple things in life and for me, they make me the happiest. “I hope these simple things are what I will forever love about life, for then I will be happy no matter where I find myself,” from R YS Perez’s I Hope You Fall in Love: Poetry Collection, and “It’s the simple things in your life that make up the bulk of it. The mundane is where we live and we end up missing most of it. We find it again in the silence and in attention of everyday life,” by Eric Overby.

For me, it will always be the simple things in life that give me the most pleasure and peace. Most of the simple things in life do not cost money as well. Some of my favorites: falling in love, the look that someone gives you who truly loves you, a hug from a friend or a complete stranger, good manners, wind blowing through trees, the sound of thunder and soft drops of rain on the roof while sitting on the porch, a good sandwich with a cold glass of milk, the sound of children laughing, holding the hand of my fiancée, mowing the yard on a hot summer day then jumping in the pool or cold shower, cracking open an ice cold beer after a hot Texas summer day spent working in the heat, the hum of the fan and AC at night, a blessing for sure, and well I could go on and on. For me, all life’s pleasures will be found in the simple things.

Having only finished the ninth grade, leaving school at an early age to begin working has taught me a lot as did living on my own since the age of 15. I am fiercely independent, not really needing to count on anyone but always happy to have someone to count on. I have learned that life can be enjoyed without the finer things that a lot of money can afford. I have always been content and happy as long as I have food to eat, a car to drive, and a place to sleep at night. Having been homeless twice in my life due to drug addiction, homelessness has always been my biggest fear; it’s a vicious cycle that is harder than you think to break out of, but that story is for another day.

Philippians 4:11-13 says, “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” God wants us to be happy in whatever circumstance that we are living in. I have had my ups and downs but have always found something to be happy about most times in my life and since finding God I have never been happier and more at peace. This is Will B saying, what simple pleasures in life make you most happy?
